Despite its wacky fourth season and that cliffhanger finale, The Mindy Project has built a strong fan following because it’s never been a conventional show and it features a real woman struggling with real-love problems. Even though Mindy often has trouble making the right decision and can be vain at times, she’s a lot of fun to watch and can sometimes be painfully relatable.
Along Mindy’s journey she learns many life lessons about both love and being independent. While there are a million things we can learn from her, we’ve pared it down to just five.
1. Be yourself. Always.
No one ever says that Mindy Lahiri is shy or afraid to show her full self. From the moment in the pilot episode where she rides her bike into a pool, she’s pretty much been unapologetic about her actions. Mindy teaches us that learning from experiences doesn’t mean you have to change your personality or the way you look. It’s better to embrace those things in your situation.
2. Career is just as important as love.
Although Mindy finds plenty of love and love interests on Project, it’s the love of her job that stays constant. When Danny tells her he’d like her to become a stay-at-home mom for their son, she resents it, reasoning that she loves her son but also loves being a doctor. She struggles with a work-life balance just like any other parent.
3. It’s perfectly fine to relate life to the pop culture. Sometimes.
Mindy is the type of character that communicates in emojis and calls herself the “female Jason Bourne.” Although her quirky pop culture references may annoy her friends and coworkers at times, they make her vibrant and help her express her feelings. And it works because it’s rare that you don’t know how Mindy is feeling.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.
Mindy is the type of person who is brutally honest, no matter what. She’s not afraid to stand up for herself, and she’s certainly not afraid to ask for what she wants. She knows her needs and she knows when a person isn’t good for her. As a strong female character, Mindy is not wasting anytime doing things that won’t move her life forward.
5. Everyone deserves a grand romantic gesture.
Rom coms often give false hope about what a relationship will be like. Mindy loves rom coms like When Harry Met Sally… and Sleepless in Seattle, but her real life relationships always seem to disappoint in the romance department. That is until Danny declares his love for her on top of The Empire State Building, an homage to Sleepless in Seattle and An Affair to Remember. It didn’t feel too cheesy, either, because everyone deserves a grand chance at love.
