My name is Victoria, and I was a shopaholic. For years, my shopping habits were out of control. Whether it was online or cursing through my favorite mall, I was consistently purchasing. But my days of shopping till I drop with no care in the world are certainly over. Let’s face it, like most millennials I have college debts, bills and etc. After reading this, you will definitely want to change your shopaholic habits and start shopping smarter.
Shopaholic Mistake #1: Retailer Emails
Almost everyday, we get emails from our favorite stores. You know, the emails that are constantly promoting “sales” and “discounts.” We sign up for these emails for special deals or unintentionally at the end of an online transaction. But when we receive these emails consistently, it can create the urge to shop more and more.
Solution: You should unsubscribe from blast retailer emails. This way you won’t be tempted to shop after you receive a deal email. Also, you can create a secondary or junk email folder to send all retailer emails to. So, you wouldn’t have to view blast emails until necessary.
Shopaholic Mistake #2: Sale Shopping
Most shoppers think they are saving money when they purchase items on sale. However, we spend more when sale shopping because we buy unnecessary items. These items often go used or unworn.
Solution: Do not purchase anything that you wouldn’t buy at a regular price. Also, you should not buy anything on impulse. Before you purchase, go home and think about it. If after a day or two you still really want the item, then go back and purchase it.
Shopaholic Mistake #3: Trendy Pieces
Trendy pieces are the items that all Fashionistas want. But we fail to realize that those trendy pieces will eventually go out style, which forces us to go buy the new latest thing all over again.
Solution: Avoid purchasing trendy pieces. Instead opt for classic pieces that don’t go out of style. Classic pieces such as white button down shirts, blue jeans and a little black dress are timeless pieces in the wardrobe. These items could be styled multiple ways and worn through each season.
Shopaholic Mistake #4: Retail Therapy
Hanging out with your girlfriends and going shopping is fun. Yet, it usually leads to overspending and shoppers remorse. The pressure to buy more is common when shopping with other shopaholics and when you to feel down.
Solution: Avoid shopping when you’re bummed out—shop when you feel happy! Also, don’t shop with other shopaholics. Shop with people who understand your budget.
Shopaholic Mistake #5: Online Shopping
What girl doesn’t love online shopping? It’s convenient and instant. And you can do it from home. But you can sometimes overspend with additional fees, like shipping costs. Also, items can be delivered in the wrong sizes or less than what you expected.
Solution: Close your laptop and walk away slowly. But, seriously, try to avoid shopping online. If possible try to make most of your purchases in person, which gives you the opportunity to try things out. Instead use your computer to find coupons for future in-store purchases.
