As someone with a huge sweet tooth, I could never get used to the idea of skipping dessert (and shouldn’t have to.) The challenge is in finding desserts that taste great without breaking the calorie bank.
I know what you’re thinking: healthy desserts are never quite as satisfying as their more indulgent counterparts. Sometimes it’s perfectly okay to pick the cheesecake, but doing so over a long period of time can wreak havoc on your health.
So what’s a girl to do when the sugar cravings kick in? Here are a few options for quick, easy and healthy dessert recipes:
Chocolate-dipped strawberries: A simple and delicious classic. Melt a couple of ounces of dark chocolate in the microwave and dip away. You might also choose milk or white chocolate, but dark chocolate is recommended for its added health benefits.
Yogurt parfait: A serving of vanilla yogurt with some tasty toppings can zap sweet cravings. Sprinkle on some fresh fruit, crumbled graham crackers, nuts, chocolate shavings or granola for a sweet treat. Bonus points for getting extra protein if you choose Greek yogurt.
Peanut butter chocolate pretzels: There’s nothing like a good salty/sweet snack. Put some dark chocolate (a square or two) and peanut butter (a teaspoon should do) in the microwave until they’re melted and dip a few rods.
Chocolate popcorn: Popcorn is a light snack and a chocolatey drizzle is just enough to give it a sweet kick. Make a small bag of popcorn (natural flavored is best) then drizzle a melted tablespoon of Nutella over it. If Nutella isn’t your thing, try peanut butter or almond butter instead.
Banana popsicles: If frozen treats are more your thing, swap your dish of ice cream for this snack. You’ll need a banana, yogurt and chocolate chips. It takes a few hours in the freezer to set, so make a batch early in the week or prepare a few hours before dinner. Cut the banana in half, cut the halves into quarters then put each chunk on a popsicle stick. Dip each piece in yogurt, sprinkle with chocolate chips and let chill in the freezer.
