Let’s start off with the bad news: this was the last Hunger Games San Diego Comic-Con panel. Sure, 20 years from now, there will probably be a reunion panel, but we won’t get another one connected with the release of the films.
While it’s a bummer, you can never really be sad when Josh Hutcherson, Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth get together. They may play three people engaged in a complicated love triangle on-screen, but they’re bantering besties in real life. That ease helped us get some information on a secret in the last scene and led for some funny moments.
There was a lot going on, but we picked eight moments/reveals we loved.
1. Don’t call Katniss’ weapon of choice a crossbow.
A crossbow has a trigger, so all you have to do is aim and shoot. But a longbow requires you to set the arrow correctly, pull it back, aim it with your target and then let go (with the proper form, of course). Both definitely aren’t easy to do without training, but one is a lot more methodical.
It’s that distinction that made Jennifer Lawrence put moderator Conan O’Brien in his place when he called her a “crossbower.”
2. Book readers will be happy with the series ending.
The ending is a little bittersweet, but it’s probably the most realistic approach to a dystopian novel like this. Everything can’t be sunshine and roses.
If you loved the way the book finished things, director Francis Lawrence says you’ll love the final scene in the last movie.
“If you love the end of the book you’ll love the end of the movie,” he said.
If you want a really great spoiler, Jennifer let a little something slip about the last scene.
3. Jennifer doesn’t think she acts too much like Katniss.
The Academy Award-winning actress and the revolution-inspiring teen don’t really have a lot of life experiences in common. That said, Jennifer does hope she learned something from Katniss after spending four years portraying the character:
“I would hope that a little bit of Katniss has rubbed off on me in a way, just in that we had similar — nothing about this is similar, because she’s brave and I’m an actress — but in the sense of something kind of falling on you. Not falling on you like a big piano,” she clarified, flustered. “What I have in my head is actually pretty interesting and there’s no way I’m going to be able to get it out. Something was kind of bestowed on Katniss in a way the same as saying yes to these movies was on to me. I’d like to hope that some of the leadership — you guys, I haven’t done interviews in like a year. … of any of them, if any rubbed off on me, I would hope and think it would be Katniss.”
She also said she’ll probably never really bid farewell to the character, since the role changed her life in so many ways. We’re taking that as a good sign for a reunion panel in a decade, giving us the opportunity to finally see her in person at a Comic-Con event.
4. None of the main cast members can whistle the movie’s theme.
The moderator put them to the test, trying to see who could do the tune justice. As it turns out, none of them could.
Liam pointed out that the Hunger Games theme actually sounds a lot like the one from X-Files.

5. The movie may have wrapped, but this trio still consider themselves best friends.
One of the best parts about the press interviews for this movie is getting to see Josh, Jennifer and Liam interact with one another. The trio seems to have formed a genuine friendship over the years and it looks like they plan to stay close.
When asked what he’d miss most about the movies, Josh gestured to his two BFFs on the pannel.
“You’re looking at it,” Hutcherson said.
There was a photo of them seen hugging on the set during filming, Jennifer decided to reveal what happened after the embrace.
6. Jennifer’s favorite moment in filming comes from the first movie.
Her favorite part of the movies is probably also your favorite part of the movies. It’s from way back in the first installment when she volunteered as a tribute.
She tried to deflect on elaborating because her other favorite scene is a secret:
“I’m blacking out right now, I can’t even remember this period of my life,” she joked. “The truth is there is [another] one, but it’s in the second [“Mockingjay”] movie, I don’t want to blow it.”
7. There’s a scene between Peeta and Liam in the final film.
We’re not sure if this scene was supposed to be kept under wraps, but even Jennifer didn’t know about it. They didn’t elaborate on what it entails (possibly Gale telling Peeta to treat Katniss like a queen), but we’re looking forward to it.
Unfortunately, the whole thing made Jennifer feel a little left out.
8. They’ve got mad love for all the Hunger Games fans.
Next to the Harry Potter fandom, the most dedicated is probably the Hunger Games fandom. (That’s just as far as YA book fandoms go, in our opinion.) While it can seem like an unrequited situation when the film stars’ only interaction with you is waving as they rush to the next interview, these actors definitely respect the dedication.
Hutcherson expressed his love for them during the panel:
“We’ve been doing these now for four years and the fans have been the best,” he said. “We’re so tired on these press tours and you guys show up with this energy and support and we appreciate it more than anything. Just thank you so much.” He even threw in a three-finger Mockingjay salute. Shut up,you’ve got chills.
When it came to what she hopes those lovable fans get from the films, she had some great insight. (Jennifer delivered it in a way only she can, of course.)
