Guys, I’m totally buggin’ right now.
Amy Heckerling, who directed the film version, confirmed in an ET interview that a Clueless musical is coming to Broadway. The book, aka script, is already written and Kristen Hanggi, who directed Rock of Ages onstage, is set to direct.
Here’s the catch: there won’t be any original songs. It’s a jukebox musical, so they’re going to pick popular singles. I’m guessing they’ll mostly focus on tracks that the movie helped make hits. Of course, there’s “The Kids in America,” Tai’s riveting rendition of “Rollin With My Homies,” The Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ “Where’d You Go” and “Supermodel” by Jill Sobule, but “I’m Just A Girl” by No Doubt could also make the cut, as it was in the film but not on the soundtrack.
I would’ve really loved original songs, like we got in the Legally Blonde musical, but it’ll just be great to see the show onstage. There still aren’t any details on casting on a release date yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Now, I need to buy a plane ticket to New York City and make sure to pack my knee-high socks.
