Going on a diet can be hard, especially when foods like pizza, bagels or potato chips exist. But luckily for us, a study done by the University of California, San Francisco, shows eating high-calorie foods like pizza or chips might actually be improving your chances of losing weight. Yes, you read that right.
The study was conducted on 43 categorically obese children, all within the ages of 9 to 18. For nine days, researchers swapped out kids usual sugary snacks for high calorie foods with low sugar contents. Think foods like hot dogs, pizza, or potato chips.
The results showed significant improvements in the children’s blood pressure, insulin levels, cholesterol, blood sugar and even liver function; only 9 days after altering their diet! More notably, the new sugar-restricted diet actually caused most children to lose weight.
“All of the surrogate measures of metabolic health got better, just by substituting starch for sugar in their processed food—all without changing calories or weight or exercise,” said Robert Lustig, author of the study “This study demonstrates that ‘a calorie is not a calorie.’ Where those calories come from determines where in the body they go”.
So the next time you’re yearning for a late midnight snack, reach for something with a little less sugar and a lot more cheese. Not only will you feel more satisfied, but it won’t break your body. It’s basically a win win.
