Happy April, beauty lovers! It’s a new month and also a new season, which means it’s time to answer more beauty questions.
Spring is every beauty gurus favorite season, because the makeup counters are overflowing with new launches. As per usual, if you haven’t checked out the previous posts in my Ask a Beauty Writer series, I highly recommend you do so. Last month, I gave you the low-down on a ‘no makeup’ makeup look that you’re going to want to master before summer rolls around.
Once again, I’m Sydney, Feather’s self-professed beauty expert and VIB Rouge member at Sephora. This month, I decided to tackle two of the most annoying beauty issues women often struggle with: acne and split ends. Because we all know that, while there are bigger problems in the world, nothing can ruin your day like a random breakout.
Keep reading to find out how to clear up your skin fast and how to repair (sort of) your overly dry ends.
I’m trying to grow out my hair, but I’ve been struggling with split ends! How can I keep my hair healthy, without sacrificing length?
Let’s be real here: split ends are the worst. There’s no bigger disappointment than growing out your hair for years, only to have to chop it all off because the ends are fried. But in reality, while split ends are often associated with long hair, they don’t discriminate. Your hair can be long or short, curly or straight and still have a serious breakage problem.
The truth is, there’s really no way to completely heal split ends. Once the hair is broken, the only way to fix it is to chop it off. There are a few products, like Bed Head’s Ego Boost, that can offer temporary smoothness, but the results are just that–temporary. If you’re struggling with serious breakage, I would recommend getting a trim and really work on prevention. The number one cause of split ends is heat, so limit the use of hair dryers and curling irons. Another key element is moisture. So look for products that are moisturizing, and treat your hair to a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week.
Help! I have a big interview coming up, and just got a massive breakout from all the stress. What can I do to make it go away quickly?
OK, I stand corrected here. Split ends are pretty bad, but breakouts are even worse. Especially when you have a big event, and suddenly it looks like you’re growing a second head. Usually, it’s best to leave the spot alone, cover it in a benzoyl peroxide treatment ( I love this one from Clean & Clear), and put a band-aid over the top to prevent any picking. If it’s a nasty whitehead that need gone yesterday, it’s OK to pop it, just make sure you do it correctly.
For tips on how to pop a pimple effectively, I highly recommend watching the video below. Dr. Ava Shamban is Allure Magazine’s resident dermatology expert, and she gives amazing advice when it comes to treating breakouts.
