For Feather’s first week-long beauty challenge, we took one for the team and decided to try oil pulling. Being the beauty junkies that we are, we were no strangers to the odd fad; we first heard about it months ago when it was sweeping the blogosphere.
For those of you not familiar with oil pulling, it’s an old Ayurvedic ritual. It involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for about 20 minutes. It’s supposed to not only improve oral health (e.g. whiter teeth, no more bad breath) but also detox your body and improve overall health. We’re willing to try just about anything, even though swishing around oil in your mouth for 20 minutes sounds downright awful.
We decided to give it a try anyway, if only to satisfy the undying curiosity of all the Feather Girls out there. We did once a day for week—for 20 minutes—with coconut oil. This can be done with just about any oil, but coconut oil is one of the most popular.
The conclusion? Oil pulling is not for this writer. While it’s supposed to have a long list of benefits, we really didn’t notice anything miraculously different. Also, 20 minutes feels a lot longer than you might think. We only gave it a week, so you’ll probably get the full effect by doing it consistently do it for months.
We should mention one thing: we did notice slightly less jaw pain. Upon further research, we did find that it’s supposed to help with symptoms of TMJ, so it may help anyone who struggles with that.
If you’re an all-natural beauty who’s really into Ayurvedic beauty treatments, oil pulling is definitely worth a shot. For us, there are easier ways to achieve whiter teeth, better breath and detox. We’ll try a juice cleanse or something.
