When some celebrity couples break up, you just shrug your shoulders. But for some, you get a little sad because you’d been rooting for things to work out. Many celebrities ended relationships this year, but these are the ones that left us shocked and a little melancholy.
Naya Rivera & Big Sean
We never would’ve guessed how quickly Glee star Naya Rivera and Big Sean would fall in love and get engaged (or that Big Sean would live tweet Glee), but the couple were quick to head down the aisle. That fire fizzled out in April when the pair called in quits. Soon after, Naya surprised everyone by secretly marrying actor Ryan Dorsey in July. Although Big Sean’s new single, “IDFWU” (aka “I Don’t F*ck With You), is rumored to be about his ex-fiancée, he’s also moved on with his new love, pop star Ariana Grande.
Katy Perry & John Mayer
After dating pretty much every woman in Hollywood, it looked like John Mayer had finally found “the one” in pop star Katy Perry. After breaking up and getting back together, the two decided they couldn’t make the relationship work and officially called it quits in February. Katy’s been linked to producer Diplo since the summer and we guess John’s somewhere playing his guitar.
Jennifer Lawrence & Nicholas Hoult
This couple was so secretive, it’s hard to tell exactly how long they were dating (and they did break-up once before in January 2013), but they got to know each other circa 2010 during the filming of X-Men: First Class. Since the break-up in August, J-Law has been linked to Coldplay lead Chris Martin and Nicholas has been getting pretty close to Kristen Stewart. Both have cited their busy work schedules as the reason their relationship failed, so we’re still hoping for a reconciliation when they slow down a bit.
Amber Rose & Wiz Khalifa
It seemed model Amber Rose had found her other half in Wiz Khalifa, especially after the couple welcomed a baby and tied the knot a few months later, but Amber filed for divorce in September. While Wiz hasn’t been vocal about the reasons, his soon-to-be ex-wife has publicly stated that he was unfaithful.
Jordin Sparks & Jason Derulo
If you’ve ever followed our live tweets during an awards show, you know that Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo were one of our favorite couples, so this break-up was one of the hardest for us to deal with this year. Since the split, Jordin released some music that definitely seems like it’s pointed at her ex. He did admit to ending their three-year relationship over the phone, though, so you can’t really blame her for being a little angry about the situation.
Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin
After a decade of marriage, actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced they were “consciously uncoupling,” which is spiritual speak for breaking up. Unlike some couples, they’ve remained close after the split, being spotted with their kids in the Bahamas and out to dinner together. The pair have also reportedly moved on, with Chris dating Jennifer Lawrence and Gwyneth linked to a Glee producer.
Ciara & Future
After going public with their relationship, singer Ciara and rapper Future couldn’t stop singing one another’s praises. When they got engaged and had a baby, the couple seemed to be on their way to living happily ever after. But three months after the birth of their son, Ciara ended the engagement amid rumors Future had an affair with his stylist.
Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon
It’s hard to believe these two went south since Nick Cannon always seemed to worship the ground Mariah Carey walked on (in an endearing way, of course), but they confirmed their separation in August. Mariah has hinted that Nick was unfaithful during their relationship.
