It’s been a few months since Coldplay released their song featuring Beyoncé, “Hymn for the Weekend.” With the Super Bowl coming up in a little over a week, it looks like they’re trying to get people excited for the joint performance.
Shot in Mumbai, the video has already raised some questions about whether it’s cultural appropriation. Let us ease your fears—it’s not. For it to be appropriation, it would have to erase the origins of its inspiration and be done without an understanding of those origins.
This video is actually the opposite, making it cultural exchange. It features a lot of extras who are from the Mumbai and showcases the city itself in a positive light. Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor, a big figure in India, also makes an appearance. Most importantly, it treats the people, city and culture with respect in its portrayal. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own thoughts on the video.
Watch the jewel-toned video and get excited about the Super Bowl halftime show.
