We’ve all had that little nagging worry—did I remember to lock the door? Usually, we muster some memory of turning the key in the lock and let it go, but imagine it wasn’t that easy. What if you kept obsessing over it? What if it lead to other worries, like your home being burglarized or an intruder waiting in your living room when you returned? What if that person hurt you in some way? These thoughts would take on a life of their own, causing you to freak out until you drove all the way back home to make sure the door was locked.
That’s similar to what protagonist Samantha McAllister is dealing with in Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone. We had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of the book, which is about a teen with purely obsessional obsessive compulsive disorder. Her mind is constantly flooded with worries that cause struggles in daily life, especially when it comes to trying to pretend those parts of herself don’t exist to keep her popular friends. Her only relief from constant worry is her misfit friends (and a guy named AJ she’d like to be more than friends with) at Poet’s Corner, something she has to keep a secret from her school friends.
As her love story with AJ grows (it’s a slow-burning love, but definitely explodes at its climax) and her secret life becomes more preferable to her every day existence at school, something happens to make Samantha question her sanity and her future path in life.
We’re being vague because we don’t want to spoil anything, but trust us when we say this book is amazing. If you can’t wait until it’s released on June 16, check out an excerpt.
