Essential oils have become such a trending topic in the media recently, but it is a little intimidating trying to understand their benefits (and if they’re really quantifiable) and how to use them properly. It was this holistic promise of improved health and well-being that made me decide to dig a little deeper into the essential oils trend.
According to DoTerra Essential Oils, essential oils are what give various plants their rich and aromatic smells. These oils have long been used for for both beauty and health-care practices, with each different plant’s oil providing unique services to the body and mind. Lavender oil, for instance, is a healing agent believed to eliminate stress. Tea tree oil is thought to boost the immune system and fight off infections. Lemon has a bright and clean smell, and increases concentration and eases digestion. There really is an essential oil out there for whatever problem or health concern you seek to solve.
My second question—after “What exactly are essential oils, anyway?”—naturally was: how can I go about administering and implementing these oils into my daily routine? Little did I know, there is a multitude of methods to deliver the benefits of essential oils to the body and mind.
After trying out a few different oils and methods for myself, I have found that adding several drops into my bath at night has done the trick and been the most effective. I love rose oil when I want to soothe my anxiety, and eucalyptus oil when my muscles are feeling a little stiff or sore.
If you’re not much of a bath person, there are other ways to derive the benefits of essential oils. You might try mixing them in with your body lotion, or using a diffuser to release the pure oil into your home or office.
