When some friends and I decided to have a dry January for our new year’s resolution, my biggest concern wasn’t going a month without having a drink and it definitely wasn’t about missing the hangover. I was worried it would result in a month of just sitting on the couch. The thought of going out to bars like I normally would while I wasn’t able to drink worried me.
But instead of letting my resolution ruin my social life, I decided to make the best of the bar scene with just a selzer in hand. Throughout the month I learned some things that made the pub trips just as fun—if not more fun—than when I was imbibing.
People Will Ask You
Whether it’s because you’re drinking out of a larger class or not having a drink in hand at all, someone will notice your lack of cocktail and ask about it. It seems like it would be simple to just answer honestly, but I found that drunk people will not just accept “I’m not drinking right now” for an answer. I found that having an more colorful excuse or just playing games with the grand drunken inquisitor is the best way to deal with it, without feeling like you’re hitting your head against the shiny oak bar.
Remember What Being Drunk Means
Surrounding yourself with drunk people while you’re sober as a judge can often be extremely irritating. You need to go into the situation with realistic expectations about how people behave when drunk—and this includes the friends you’re used to drinking with, as well as strangers in the bar crowd. If you’re able to let some of the intoxicated’s more annoying habits roll off you, it can actually be really funny to people-watch as the clock ticks closer to last call.
Try a Different Glass
It can be awkward to carry around that water glass that’s noticeably larger than the rocks glasses they’re serving alcohol in. If this makes you feel like you’ve got a bulls-eye on your back—er, or in your hand, you can order a soda water with lime and ask the bartender to serve it in a rocks glass. Now you’re walking the walk.
