Usually, the beginning stages of decorating a room in your home start with a blank slate. Some may say this provides creative freedom, as you can take your room in any direction you wish, but you just say it makes it all the more intimidating and stressful. How can you possibly get the process going when there are literally a million (and counting) different choices you could make?
I found myself feeling this way when starting out with my first home decoration project. I wasn’t exactly sure where to start, and I went in with no real plan. But, upon completing the first room, and then the second, I started to realize a pattern in my design process that makes it infinitely easier to tackle any décor project.
The secret is simple, and once you start thinking with this mindset, it will change the way you put a room together. All you have to do is pick one (yes, just one!) piece of furniture or décor that you like—no, love—and commit to it. It can be a sofa (mine was), or a coffee table, a lounge chair or even something smaller like a reading lamp or an area rug. Whatever it is, just pick one item that you are sure you love.
From there, you can start to build an entire design off your one item. Once I selected and committed to a green sofa for my sunroom project, I approached every decision with this piece in mind. What side table will look good next to this sofa? What pillows will accent its pretty green color? What kind of artwork will match its cottage vibe? Asking yourself these questions about one particular piece will automatically eliminate so many other superfluous options, only leaving you with the ones that will truly make sense and look good with what you already have.
