If didn’t know (read: if you’ve been living under a rock), Scarlett Johansson plays the badass Black Widow in the Marvel Universe, which includes The Avengers.
As the only lead female character in the films, there’s a real opportunity here to ask some pertinent questions, like what Scarlett’s process is when playing such a complex character or how she handles the emotional growth of a character whose spread across so many Marvel films without it feeling disjointed.
You know, the kinds of questions the guys get.
Instead, she gets asked whether or not she wears clothing under her fighting suit.
We’re glad Scarlett never seems to stand for the sexism she gets in these interviews, which will hopefully push interviewers to do better with questioning. Like the time Robert Downey Jr. was asked about Tony Stark’s egotistical nature changing over the course of time, only for Scarlett to then be asked how she gets in shape for the role.
Also standing behind her is Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), who publicly put his support behind her on Tumblr last year.
This year, he’s putting his money where his mouth is. To help level the playing field, Mark answered some questions from Cosmoplitan UK that Scarlett would usually be asked. While the answers are funny, this is a great step in shining light on a bigger problem with how female actresses are treated, which is a reflection of what the media thinks women want to know.
