Updated, Aug. 1: Sorry, everyone, but the people who created the Pokémon GO app actually aren’t making a Harry Potter themed one.
According to Gizmodo, those rumors turned out to be unfounded. As far as can tell, the false story was first re-published by HelloGiggles (that’s who we got it from) and then snowballed into one big rumor that everyone was buying into.
We did check HG’s source and Googled it to make sure they weren’t the only ones reporting. But that didn’t seem to help since hundreds of sites got duped.
The lure of Harry Potter is just so strong, that everyone wanted to believe. Maybe it’ll happen someday, but we’re not getting that app right now. At least we still have Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in book form and maybe soon on Broadway.

Get your wants ready, wizards and witches! Also, charge up your smartphones because Harry Potter GO is in production.
The same company that created the insanely popular Pokémon GO is about to allow you to immerse yourself in the wizarding world.
Here’s what the senior developer on the project had to say:
“We have acquired the rights for the app. The demand for this title was absolutely insane, so we figured we’d give it a shot. If we’re lucky we might see a launch by early 2017, but it’s hard to tell this early in the project.”
“We want to do something with schools of witchcraft and wizardry, similar to pokestops in Pokemon GO. As wells a quest system, and possibly large scale completely interactive events, but no promises. That’s all I can say.”
Since J.K. Rowling has been expanding the wizarding world by releasing stories on other schools, we’ll have a lot more options for the Harry Potter version of a “pokestop.” We’re hoping there’s a way to find horcruxes, unlock new spells and maybe even find some magical creatures.
The developers hope to have it ready early next year. Now, we can always be in the warm embrace of Harry Potter’s magical world.
