It’s the holiday season, which means you’ll need something to watch after your family has sufficiently chased you into your bedroom with their craziness. (Don’t worry, no one’s family is normal.) To give you something to do while you’re tucked away in solitude, we’ve compiled our monthly list of the best Netflix has to offer.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Admit it, you’ve missed Mia Thermopolis. The Princess Diaries films are the closest you’ll probably ever come to feeling like you have anything common with a royal. Anne Hathaway’s role as the awkward teenage princess is the reason we could never imagine being a Hatha-hater. What’s not to love about Anne?
Happy Christmas (Available Nov. 23)
Anna Kendrick stars in the this comedy-drama about a woman uproots her life after a breakup and moves in with her brother and his family. Problems soon arise when her behavior causes tension between her sibling and sister-in-law. This is a coming-of-age movie that’s got a holiday theme, but could be watched year-round. (Since Anna Kendrick is in it, we know you’ll watch it now, though.)
Total Recall (1990)
It’s the holidays, so indulge your dad a little by watching this with him. No, you don’t get to look at hottie Collin Farrell (he starred in the recent remake), but you do get a tolerable sci-fi movie and to see how far special effects have come, as these were groundbreaking graphics back in the day. Watch Avatar after this for comparison.
Snowpiercer (Available Nov. 22)
If you’re feeling like some action and dystopia, you can’t go wrong with this drama, featuring Chris Evans. While we love seeing him in Captain America, it’s good to see him out of the suit and in a role just as suited to his acting talents. This movie is set aboard a train carrying the last of humanity—separated by social class—and follows the eventual leader of a rebellion.
The One I Love (Available Nov. 29)
If you’re looking for a romantic film with a twist—this is it. When a couple heads to a retreat to rekindle their relationship, they run across another couple that looks just like them (but slightly better). Hijinks ensue as they try to figure out if they’re both losing their minds or if they’ve possibly entered another dimension.
Portlandia (Season 4)
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Season 9)
Nikita (Season 4, available Nov. 22)
Lilyhammer (Season 3, available Nov. 21)
