The Global Citizen Festival featured some big names in music (Beyoncé, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran) and movies (Salma Hayek, Olivia Wilde), but there were also appearances by well-known political figures, like First Lady Michelle Obama.
The festival is held to support the Global Citizen campaign, which seeks to end poverty by achieving 17 Global Goals. One of those goals—education. The White House’s Let Girls Learn initiative estimates that 62 million girls are not in school.
To help raise awareness, which could led to lasting change, and promote Let Girls Learn, the First Lady addressed the music festival attendees (and the millions watching on television/the Internet). She asked everyone watching to post a photo of themselves on social media using the hashtag, #62MillionGirls.
It immediately started trending on Twitter and Instagram.
