You probably experienced bullying at some point in your adolescence, but the Internet has changed the game. Anonymity makes it much easier for people to target others, mostly women, leaving hateful comments for them to read. They’re bolder than the playground bullies in many ways because they feel more secure behind the computer keyboard with a fake screenname.
Last week, we wrote about how #ThePowerOfMakeup movement is standing up to makeup shamers after a video by YouTuber NikkieTutorials, and now another beauty vlogger is standing up to online bullies. Em Ford, of My Pale Skin, said she started posting images of herself without makeup about three months ago. She received thousands of comments, and a good portion of them were negative.
She turned the negativity in a beautiful but heartbreaking video. In it, she starts out bare-faced with the mean comments people wrote about her online popping up around her. At some point, she applies her makeup, but now that people have seen her without it, they’re saying she wears makeup because she’s ugly. Basically, it’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Em’s video, entitled “YOU LOOK DISGUSTING,” just shows a small part of what she has to deal with on the Internet and it moved us to tears. We’re hoping this also spurns a big movement, leading to more change when it comes to Internet harassment.
