Last summer, several celebrities were victims of a hacking scandal. The result—nude pictures of them were released without their consent. One of the most famous faces implicated in the incident was Hunger Games actress (and everyone’s imaginary BFF) Jennifer Lawrence. She was also one of the only women involved to make a powerful statement about the incident.
“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this,” she says. “It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world.”
That quote was featured in Vanity Fair, along with a spread shot by famed photographer Patrick Demarchelier in July. Months later, the magazine has released another image of the shoot, featuring a nude J-Law posing with a boa constrictor. We’ve already seen the “What’s the difference between this and her nudes being leaked” comments, along with the “Well, this invalidates what she said before” statements. But what this really does is back up her position.
We’ve never made any secret of our stance: who you share your body with should be a choice. This photo, shot before the hacking incident, is a reminder that she has a right to exercise that choice, in a photo shoot or in pictures she sends to her romantic interests. The hacker did not have a right to make those decisions for her, even if she’s OK with sharing her body with millions of people. If the choice isn’t hers, it’s not OK.
The same goes for women all over the world who share their body with someone, only to have that person forward the images to random friends. There’s always a lot of blame put on women for putting those images out there, but we forget about the people who violated their choices and their trust.
We’re happy that J-Law is continuing to keep this conversation going because it’s one we need to have. Thanks for continuing to be our role model (and imaginary bestie), Jennifer!
