I can tell you right now that 2017 is going to be a big year. Lots of things have changed for me in 2016 and I feel like I’ve entered a new stage of my life. I’ve decided that 2017 is going to be the year for me to explore this new stage, try new things and gain some new experiences, so, let me tell you why you should do the same.
In the worlds of the fabulous Jessica Day, “This is the year of uuuuuussssss!” (just imagine that in a sing song voice). 2017 is clearly going to be a game changer for all types of people, especially woman. With new President-elect Donald Trump on his way to the white house we’ve already seen a slew of misogyny directed at woman, comments ranging from groping woman to how they only belong in the home, to which I’m sure this will only be followed by more unpleasantness. This leads me to believe that it’s more important now than ever before, that as young woman we seize the day and do the things we’ve always wanted to do, showing that we will not be hindered by anyone. If you’re not happy with the way you’re living your life or you feel like something is lacking, then now is the time to take some chances and try new things. Enrich your life with new and daring things, take a leap into something you’ve never done before.
For 2017 I have two major focuses, one is working towards my dream, completing my first novel, something I’ve always been terrified of doing, and two, bringing awareness to victims of sexual abuse. Both are scary, daunting tasks for me, but they are both things I feel passionate for and both things I believe will prove to any of the naysayers or misogynists out there that I am not a woman to be reckoned with. This will be a year to find an outlet for all this energy I’ve held in check for too long and I would love to see other woman harness the same energy by finding something new that they love or feel passionate about. If you can, make a list of all the things you’ve ever wanted to try, kind of like a bucket list, and challenge yourself to do the things that scare you the most. If you tackle the thing that causes you fear and you win, then you’ll know that there is nothing else that can hold you back.
Everyone always has something they’ve always wanted to try or has a dream that they’ve kept hidden in the furthers corners of their mind, now’s the time to act. Give yourself goals that can only benefit you in the long run, whether it’s starting to read more novels, exercising, bungee jumping, peaceful protest, find something that makes you feel alive, there’s nothing worse than being alive yet not actually living. Figure out what makes you burn and make the most of it. Everyone deserves to fulfill their dream, everyone deserves to feel strong and that they are being their best self. I implore you, get out there and do what makes you feel good, goodness can only spread more goodness and I fear that more goodness is something we will desperately need in the coming year. You can only take care of others if you take care of yourself first, right? So, make this year about you, make yourself happy and then you can share that happiness with those around you, the world needs to be shown that nothing can hold you back as a woman. Your choice to do what you love can only help to inspire others around you. So take your chances this year, be happy and spread that happiness for all to enjoy.
